Family Nature Club promotes family bonding, nature appreciation

Family Nature Club promotes family bonding, nature appreciation

In our modern world it can be difficult and sometimes daunting to spend time in nature with our families. In an effort to help families reconnect and develop lifelong conservation values in children, the Lee Richardson Zoo now offers a new opportunity for families to connect with nature through the Family Nature Club.

The Lee Richardson Zoo Family Nature Club will meet at 2 p.m. every third Saturday of the month starting June 20 at the Nature Play Space located behind the Finnup Center inside the zoo. Parents and children under 7 years old are invited to attend, older siblings are welcome as well. Participation is free for all.

This club helps families connect with nature and wildlife by offering experiences and activities that expand beyond a normal trip to the zoo. Experienced educators will guide participants through activities including both structured and unstructured nature play. Nature play includes opportunities to freely explore natural elements, participate in guided games, crafts and challenges, and focus on goals that incorporate problem solving and observations of surrounding wildlife. Travel opportunities include trips to surrounding natural landmarks such as Scott Lake, the Sandsage Bison Range, pumpkin patches and other areas.

The Family Nature Club looks to strengthen family ties and promote a greater sense of community with a focus on inspiring conservation of wildlife and wild places. In addition, children will develop gross, fine motor and problem solving skills, as well as, imaginative abilities and a greater appreciation for nature.
