Lee Richardson Zoo welcomes several spring births

Springtime brings baby animals, and that’s exactly the case at Lee Richardson Zoo. Two pronghorn fawns (one male and one female) were born into the herd of five Friday.

Pronghorns are native to the short-grass prairies of North America and are the fastest land animal on the continent, second to the cheetah worldwide.

The pronghorns are not the only recent births at the zoo. Saturday Mina, a 16-year-old Chinese goral, gave birth to her second offspring. Her first young was born last year. She continues to astound those who work with the species by having babies at her old age. The zoo gladly reports, mom and baby are doing fine.

Goral are native to southeastern Siberia, Burma and western Thailand, and are known for their agility. In the wild, they stay near cliffs where their extraordinary climbing abilities help them avoid predators. Their coloration also provides camouflage, which helps them stay safe by blending into the environment.

The herd of goral, including mom and baby, located in the Wild Asia habitat at Lee Richardson Zoo, can be viewed from 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. daily.

The pronghorn fawns moved to an off-exhibit area from their North American Plains enclosure to be hand-reared by zoo keepers. Pronghorns typically have a fast flight response, so our husbandry and rearing practices take this into account. Captive pronghorns are hand-reared by staff from their second day of life to accustom them to humans and other stimuli that might normally cause them to run. This is why our exhibit animals appear so friendly and curious toward the public
