Lee Richardson Zoo seeks residents’ help in naming lion cubs

Lee Richardson Zoo asks for your help to name the lion cubs born on May 17. You can go to the zoo website or stop by the Finnup Center for Conservation Education or Safari Shoppe to help select the winning names from options chosen by zoo staff.

Tuesday the lion cubs had their first veterinary check-up. All the cubs proved to be in good health. While the cubs are very cute, they’re definitely not so cuddly. There are four boys and one girl. Two of the cubs showed a bit of their personality during the appointment with the doctor. The little girl seems to be quite curious, walking casually among the care team members’ feet during the whole process. One of the little boys was showing more of his gruff side, standing in front of his siblings trying to let the humans know who was boss with his body language and his vocalizations.

Possible names for the male cubs will be available for you to vote on
June 18 - July 6. Winning names will be announced on July 7 when Razi, the cubs’ father, will select the name for the female cub. The cubs still need their first round of vaccinations before they can go outside. The vet appointment for vaccinations will be in the next few weeks.

African lions have lost much of their habitat in Africa to human development and now exist mainly in wildlife preserves. Remaining populations are isolated from each other to prevent the danger of becoming inbred, which leads to further decline. Some populations have been decimated by canine distemper spread by domestic dogs.

Please visit the Zoo’s website, Facebook page, or television Channel 8 (at 9 a.m., noon, 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.) to see videos of the cubs.
